The importance of disability rights for Palestinians
Disability rights are protected under international law:
International humanitarian law and international human rights law protect the rights of people with disabilities in armed conflict
Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities
Article 11 – Situations of risk and humanitarian emergencies
States Parties shall take, in accordance with their obligations under international law, including international humanitarian law and international human rights law, all necessary measures to ensure the protection and safety of persons with disabilities in situations of risk, including situations of armed conflict, humanitarian emergencies and the occurrence of natural disasters.
Protection of Palestinians with disabilities.
Access to prosthetics and treatment as well as devices must be protected.
Violations of Human Rights:
My son was in a state of shock, he was screaming. My daughter didn’t know who to help first, me or her kids. She was yelling at her brother, “Help your dad!” A neighbor heard her screams and came and helped me get out of the house, which wasn’t easy—there was rubble everywhere.
“I don’t have a hearing device, so I don’t know when they are bombing! I can feel the vibration under my feet and I see people running without knowing what is happening!”
(Human Rights Watch, Nov. 1, 2023)
“The Israeli blockade prevented my treatment outside Gaza and consequently I was unable to save my eye.”
Defending rights together
We must work together to defend the rights of Palestinians with disabilities by connecting with organizations working on the ground in Palestine and in Palestinian refugee camps.
Raising awareness – disability in Palestine:
“This region has increasing disability rates among the population because of exposure to repeated armed conflicts in addition to the current bombardment of the Gaza strip, and all relief teams and international bodies must take this into account,”
(Heba Hagrass, UN Special Rapporteur on the rights of persons with disabilities)
